Cheap mobile calls help more young couples elope

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali courtship was different in Hassan Aden's day. When he was a teenager, you gave the girl's parents 11 camels and an AK-47 assault rifle as bride price and then waited respectfully.

Now, the 55-year-old said, a mobile phone service that seems to be the only thing working in the failed Horn of Africa state is helping drive a rise in elopements, pregnancies out of marriage and a steady erosion of Somalia's conservative values.

"The youth of today enjoy modern technology, fast transportation and free-of-charge marriages," Aden, a store owner, told Reuters at a coffee shop in the capital Mogadishu.

"Today, even reasonable boys pay just $50 bride price and a copy of the holy Koran after making the girl pregnant or seeing her secretly for months."

In a drought-ravaged land where rebels are trying to topple a fragile government, gun battles break out almost daily and nearly 20,000 civilians have been killed since the start of 2007, cheap mobile commun ...

Wife's free handbag a "symbol of derision"

Posted by lily on Nov 06, 2009 @ 08:44
LONDON (Reuters) - FIFA vice-president Jack Warner is returning a handbag given to his wife by England's 2018 World Cup bid because he says it has become "a symbol of derision, betrayal and embarrassment."

British newspapers reported Thursday that the CONCACAF president had written to FA chairman Lord Triesman to complain about media coverage of what was intended to be a goodwill gesture.

Warner, one of the FIFA executive members who will decide who gets the tournament, also told Triesman that "there is nothing that your FA can offer me to get my vote.

"If England does get it, it is because CONCACAF and I sincerely believe that England is deserving."

Warner kicked up a storm last month when the Trinidadian told a Leaders in Football conference in London that England's bid was falling off the pace and needed more 'stardust'.

The 230 pound ($378.8) handbag, whose cost is within FIFA guidelines over acceptable gifts, was given to Warner's wife by former FA c ...

The U.S. pay czar will cut in half the average compensation for 175 employees at firms receiving large sums of government aid, with the vast majority of salaries coming in under $500,000, according to people familiar with the government's plans.

As expected, the biggest cut will be to salaries, which will drop by 90% on average. Kenneth Feinberg, the Treasury Department's special master for compensation, also intends to demand a host of corporate governance changes at those firms. ...

Umbrella discontinues microsystems line
(0)
Posted by Anthony on Jun 19, 2008 @ 00:46

The Umbrella Group has officially ended the microsystems line of product
solutions. This, however, does not mean Umbrella will not continue to offer
service to those with whom we had contracts.

Jim Blackburn had this to say about the recent decision:

"This was something that had been coming down the pipe for some time. We are
going in a more software-centric direction, and most of us see this as a good
decision for the company. We will continue, though, to maintain and produce
the Neptune line of Servers and Workstations, but for businesses only."

After the announcement to customers-only over a month ago, today is the last
day that workstations and servers will be sold to non-contract accounts.

Umbrella launches new interactive web site
(0)
Posted by Anthony on May 05, 2008 @ 23:40

The previous web site the Umbrella group used was known for how drab and unimportant it looked, but now that has changed. We have launched a new web site that not only is visually more attractive, but also allows members of our online communities to login and interact with our web site more easily.

Umbrella, as of recently, has been fairly quiet in public about what is going on behind doors, but many are speculating large changes are coming to its online communities. We will have to wait and see where this is all going.

I Want Lyrics officially launches
(0)
Posted by Anthony on Jan 03, 2008 @ 20:30

The Umbrella Group has launched a new online community based around song lyrics. This project is a resurrection of the now defunct "Got Lyrics?" web site run by Slacknet Communications - which was purchased by Umbrella late last year.

Umbrella vice president, Jim Blackburn, a long time fan of music said the inspiration for rushing such a web site into product centers around the fact that "most lyrics web sites on the Internet have the same lyrics as others, and those same lyrics are typically inaccurate or incomplete; it's a real disaster." He hopes that because of the accuracy of the lyrics, it will help make the web site popular.

Umbrella purchases Slacknet Communications

Posted by Anthony on Nov 11, 2007 @ 09:24

No more than two weeks after announcing a partnership with online community The Libelldra Forge, both Umbrella and Slacknet Communications announce that they will be merging, that is Slacknet is merging into the much larger Umbrella. There is no doubt, to some, that this is due to the talented programmers at Slacknet and their experience with online communities.

All projects at Slacknet will be moved to Umbrella, and many will undergo many changes. No doubt the ones most worried are those who use Slacknet IRC Network, which they believe will not be profitable for Umbrella and will be shutdown. However, Tom Mruzik, leader of the Slacknet IRC Network project had this to say:

"I'm not worried about Umbrella buying Slacknet Communications, because I think it will actually help us. Umbrella is known, at least by us at Slacknet, for promoting and funding projects will are not necessarily profitable, but do help build community."

M. Mruzik, the leader of the new project initiate which is beli ...
